Bert & Ernie

I received a comment from a new reader (or, perhaps a long-time reader, but ... at the very least... a new commenter). Regardless, his name is Bert. Welcome Bert.

It made me think of Bert & Ernie.

Does anyone know where the names for Bert & Ernie came from?

I'll give you a hint.... they weren't originally muppet names.
In fact, they'd been used on the Silver Screen LONG before Jim Henson was a household name...

Muse over that, throw out some answers, and I'll come back with the Real Answer in the next day or two.

(Here's another little hint: those of you who know me know that I LOVE the source where these names originally came from.... and that's ALL I'm going to say....)

iPod Humor

So, my 12 year old daughter decided to buy an iPod with the cash she got for Christmas.

I, being VERY old school, have never owned an iPod (or ANY MP3 player for that matter).

I still listen to CD's in my car and home.... (clearly quite antiquated, I am).

Anyway, my daughter, in her Great Eagerness to use this new piece of electronic wonderment, downloaded multiple Lil' Wayne songs (that's him above... the Gangsta looking fellow that Any Sensible Person would AVOID if you saw him coming towards you on a vacant street.....). Unbeknownst to my daughter, her iPod ALSO downloaded all the sermons I had on my computer by the other man pictured above - Reverend Nathaniel Bronner - who pastors a fabulous, spirit filled church here in Atlanta - The Ark of Salvation.

Of course, my daughter is mortified that there are SERMONS on her iPod. And I (with completely serious face) tell her that there is No Way to remove them. (insert smile). So, my sweet little girl can listen to her Gangsta cRap and then have her soul uplifted by the eloquent and relevant Pastor Bronner. (I take great glee in knowing that.) God works in wonderful ways.

Car Lust

We had a party at our house Saturday night. Nothing huge - only about a dozen people - friends we've known forever - lots of laughter, food, etc.

Our friend Michael brought his new sportscar (WRX STI... pictured above, although his is black) and took me for a ride.... I literally have not driven that fast in a car in YEARS... we took some of the curvy little 2 lane roads near our house that are almost always vacant and the speed took my breath away and made me giggle until I couldn't stop. That car corners like it's on rails. It was a BLAST. :)

Later I found out that car was made for off road rally car racing. And let me tell you, driving at those speeds, around those corners made me feel like I was 17 again..... LOTSA fun.. :)

Now I'm wanting a sportscar of my very own....yes, I have Car Lust.... I wonder if I can trade in my Practical Mommy Sedan for the above?

Christmas 2009 (with a shot from Straight No Chaser)

Merry Christmas, y'all!
For someone, like me, who is NOT into Christmas at all, it never ceases to amaze me how much I actually enjoy the day once it gets here.

My husband and I decided not to get each other gifts this year. Money has been very tight, and we decided to spend our money on the kids instead. However, he surprised me this morning with a beautiful bouquet and a lovely letter about what a great wife I am and how my presence in his life was "the greatest gift". I really almost cried (and I NEVER cry). I will keep that letter (along with a few petals from the flowers) forever and ever.

After 18 years of marriage, he can still surprise me. I love that.

The kids got a ton of cash from their grandparents. They're at that age.... they don't believe in Santa.... they're too old for toys... so what do you give them? The cold hard stuff. And BOY were they happy!

On a humorous note... I believe my mother is now a candidate for a hearing aid. My 13 year old son was trying to tell her that "beer was better than wine" (from a health perspective, which isn't true by the way) and she totally mis-heard him and announced "Beer can cure the blind?"
Hilarious.

Hope you and yours had a great Christmas.
Take a moment to remember the Person the day is about.
And here's some groovy music for your enjoyment (thanks to ChiTown Girl for turning me on to these guys.... I'm now in love with them!)

Merry Christmas, Mr. Goldman.

At long last (and after 5 years in the Brazilian courts), this poor man finally has his son back. Thank God.

Blessings and peace to you, David and Sean. You deserve it, after all you've both been through.

Heard from the Back Seat

.... so my poor, stressed out, UPS man husband is up in the mountains this weekend with his buddies for a "guys weekend" (read: steaks and Grey Goose), and the kids and I are at home. I decided to take the kids out for shopping and dinner (crazy me... Atlanta Christmas traffic).

Anyway, as we're stuck in mall traffic, moving at a snail's pace, and my 13 year old son decides to quiz my 12 year old daughter in the backseat regarding "historical trivia". The results were priceless. It went something like this:

J: What was the name of the ship that took the pilgrims to America?
S: The Titanic?
J: Are you kidding?
S: (after a long silence) No.
J: No, it was NOT the Titanic. It was the Mayflower.
J: Ok, let's try another one. Why did the pilgrims come to America?
S: Were they ill?
(at this point, I'm laughing hysterically, but silently... tears are streaming down my face.... suffice it to say that history is NOT my daughter's strong suit....)
J: NO, they were not ill. (He sighs loudly.)
J: OK, how about this. Who did the Americans fight?
S: (starting to get exasperated... she doesn't want to miss a 3rd question..) What do you MEAN who did the Americans fight? We've fought LOTS of people!
J: I'll give you a big hint. They wore RED COATS.
(I almost wreck the car at this point, I'm laughing so hard....)
S: (triumphantly) The British!

J and I both start to clap. We're thrilled she got one right.

I love being a mom. Even though my kids aren't little anymore, and the "magic" of Santa is long gone, moments like this one are priceless.... I loved this!
