"17 Again" and "Wolverine" - 2 Movie Reviews

Apparently, our kids are ruling the "what-movie-shall-we-see-this-weekend" question.
Here are the reviews of the two latest offerings we have seen:

17 Again
VERY pleasantly surprised. Let me begin by saying I am hardly a Zac Effron fan, however, this young man is not just a handsome face. He was VERY funny and VERY charming in this movie. Unlike the "High School Musical" series, this movie is not just a star vehicle for him. It truly does have a very cute little plot, is well acted, charming, and extremely funny. There's plenty of grown up humor to keep mom and dad laughing. Leslie Mann (who I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE!) is in the movie and is her usual brilliant self. (For those not familiar with the name, she played Katherine Heigl's sister in "Knocked Up" and was also in the "40 Year Old Virgin".) She's beautiful and has GREAT comic timing. Others in the movie are Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon as Ned (the best friend) who is really quite hilarious.

2 BIG Thumbs Up from me... (I would even see this a 2nd time)!

X Men Origins: Wolverine
My 13 year old son has had May 1st circled on his calendar for MONTHS..... not only was "Wolverine" the movie coming out, but so was "Wolverine" the video game.

So, all 4 of us went to see the movie. As many of you know, I LOVE Hugh Jackman (just ask D'Arcy and Pumpkin!.....), but I just REALLY can't stomach 2 hours of explosions, mutant super powers, Ryan Reynolds as a sword wielding super-fighter (I will forever picture him as a smarmy waiter in "Waiting"), and Riggins from "Friday Night Lights" as Remy LeBeau (although I must say both Hugh and "Remy LeBeau" did look quite yummy).

Bottom line: I'm not an action film girl. At a certain point my brain just clicks off.
BUT: my son and my husband thought this movie was Da Bomb! (And everyone else I've talked with who is into action movies agreed.... so..... )

2 Thumbs Up (IF you're an action movie person....)
2 Thumbs DOWN (if you're into romantic comedies, like me....)

I'm not going to read this yet since Jason and I are away at a conference and going to see my boyfriend in Wolverine this week. I will check back in when we do. :)

Have a great week!

Thanks for the heads-up. Since we watched Monty Python's "Life of Brian" this weekend, I haven't much to add. =)

Pumpkin,
Have fun! Candidly.... I could watch Hugh Jackman unload a dishwasher, and find it completely transfixing. :-)

Jason, as himself said...

Oops. I just read it and we haven't gone to see it yet. I'm going with an open mind and the hopes of seeing some nekkid Hugh Jackman.

Great reviews. I also can't sit for 2 hours with the bombs and fires going...too much for my brain. I need some Sandra Bullock or Ben Stiller funnies.

Sally,
Your 17 year old (and YOU) will really enjoy "17 Again" - I promise!

And Jason, yes, you will see some "eye candy" Hugh Jackman in this movie!

Suzanne,
Totally with ya, girl. In fact, I'm REALLY looking forward to "Funny People" the new comedy with Adam Sandler and Leslie Mann.... LOVE ME some Adam Sandler!

We saw it this afternoon and enjoyed it. It's corny, but fun and Hugh is GORGEOUS even with the mutton chops, Tim Riggins is also cute in it.
I watched him on Oprah on Friday and he said it was all him all the time in the movie and we would have seen a lot more, but it had to stay PG-13. When we looked at our ticket stub, Jason and I both said, "Damn you PG-13!"

HA! I've seen this post up for awhile, and now have time for the comment it deserves.

First of all, I'm going to make an embarrassing confession. My sister and I both have a crazy crush on Zac Efron that we like to play up in front of people. So, holding true, we decided to see 17 Again on opening night with all the teeny boppers. We thought it would be awful and we would mock it and have a great time (we like bad movies!) but we both ended up looking at each other half way through in surprise because we were actually REALLY loving this film! And I agree about Leslie Mann, she's awesome.

We saw Hugh too. And I can appreciate a good action flick, I just appreciate it more when I can see Hugh's ass and remember our shared moments together! I should really sent you the photos of him I got that night, they're incredible!!

Without Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds Wolverine Origins would have been on a par with Star Wars Episode 2, except with worse special effects -- harsh but true

D'Arcy - I KNOW! Weren't you surprised by 17 Again??? I was totally expecting another "vehicle" like "High School Musical" so I was really surprised that it was a decent little movie.... ! And yes, Zac is quite a handsome young man. I think we'll be seeing him for decades to come....

(And as far as HUGH, well, you already KNOW how I feel about him..... as I've said before, he could unload a dishwasher, and I would sit there and watch, transfixed and smiling....) :)
