If you've never read Emerson's writings on Self Reliance, do yourself a favor and do so... they are very thought provoking.
And here is a very thought provoking post on the same topic.

Your blog is very neat and it was good to see that you also critiqued some movies. Now I will try renting W. My hubby loves to watch movies, but we've had some sorry ones to look at (we belong to Blockbuster online) and some have gone back after only 15 minutes of realizing that someone payed way too much to make a goofy movie like this!
blessings,
marcy
p.s. I am also a huge animal lover which is obvious from my own blog.
What a happy, fun template--perfect for you and your blog title!!
I *LOVE* Emerson. Like LOVE him. Like BEAM when I talk about him, read his stuff, read about him, etc. LOVE Emerson. I've always felt like he's expressing much of what I feel and think.
I had a really cool professor in graduate school. She always explained that "self reliance" doesn't always mean doing everything yourself. It can also mean knowing where your resources are and utilizing them. I thought that was a very good definition since some people can take "self reliance" to such an extreme, they can sometimes look down on those who need help at times. I like her definition. I think it's good to try to do all we can ourselves, but recognize that having help sometimes when necessary doesn't make us bad people (not just financially but socially, emotionally, etc.)--we all help one another. Hope that makes sense . . .
Boquinha - yes, this is EXACTLY how I define self reliance as well. I certainly don't know how to fix the wiring in my house, but I know where and how to find the resources to take care of wiring issues.
I think it's critically important for all of us - especially women - to be self reliant.
And yes, I love Emerson as well.
If you'll look on my sidebar under LABELS, I've blogged about Emerson many times. :)
BRAVO. We need more of america to get on this band wagon too....don't you think????
Love the new layout.
It makes me want to say "chirp chirp" or maybe "PEEP PEEP?"
very cute...like YOU>
Suz,
Absolutely. Self reliance is WHERE IT'S AT! :)
Great post, HW.. We all need to be financially independent.. George and I love to listen to Dave Ramsay on the radio. He's a finanacial guy and people call in for advice. He is incredible--and urges people to get 'debt-free' (except for their mortgage)... That's being self-reliant for sure..
Love your new blog theme...
Have a great weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy
