The "Latest" Humor with my 5th Grade Daughter

Normally I don't blog about my kids much (I like to preserve their privacy), but this is just so funny I must share.....

My daughter, S., came home from school Monday and announced with Great Giddy Enthusiasm: "Mommy, I'm TRAINING for a 10K run!"
I looked at her and said "Honey, do you know how far a 10K run is?"
"Well, no, not really, but Hannah says it's going to be a lot of fun and we're going to start training at her house today, and we're going to have snacks afterwards and hang out."

Ah. Snacks and hanging out. The phrase that pays.

So, I explain to her that 10K is equivalent to about 6 miles and that when we take the dogs to our favorite park and take the BIG PATH through the woods and past the duck pond that is about a mile and a half..... "... so imagine doing that BIG PATH about 4 times...."

She lets this sink in, with no apparent effect. Clearly, the lure of Snacks And Hanging Out is quite tempting.

So anyway, she gets ready for "training"..... she's wearing her brown high top sneakers (totally inappropriate for jogging, which I tell her, and which she chooses to ignore) and LOTS OF PERFUME. (Being in 5th grade, she has just recently discovered perfume. I've purchased "body splash" for her but of course she prefers MY (expensive) perfume. (I've explained the concept of "less is more" when it comes to perfume.... but this doesn't quite compute when you're 11 years old.)

So we hop in the car, I pick up her other two friends who are also going to be "training" for this event. They, TOO, are wearing HEAVY PERFUME. (I guess these girls are so afraid of stinking from the upcoming sweaty run that the perfume is to offset any "offensive odors").

So now I have three 5th grade girls in the backseat.... all smelling to high (sweet) heaven of various perfumes.... and off we go to Hannah's house, for "10K training" (supervised by Hannah's mother, who is a marathoner, by the way), and, of COURSE, "snacks and hanging out".

And yes, I will post Progress Reports!
It should be interesting!

Dawn,
I was focusing on breathing through my MOUTH so I wouldn't PASS OUT from the perfume clouds in the car!! :)

But yes, it was really funny!

And when she got home - she was EXHAUSTED!! (And said "Mommy, I need some running shoes! These high tops aren't good for running!")

Oh, that is too funny. I love it...but the perfume would KILL me.
Hey, I would pretty much do anything for a snack too...she is not that far off. Luckily she did not have on a pair of pumps. :)

What do you mean you don't blog about your kids??? I would have NOTHING to say. :)
I understand.....

10K might be rather long for a run, but it's what our 401(k) is going to end up becoming in the long run.

But you should print this post, save it somewhere, then use it as blackmail when she starts bringing your (long off) future son in law.

Cliff, that is VERY clever! :)

Too funny! I would have had to drive with all the windows open, as I can NOT do perfume!

At least she admitted that you were right about the shoes :)

Does her friend have a cute older brother? That's one explanation that might make sense of the perfume & nonathletic shoes...then again, maybe they WILL train and do the run! Looking forward to updates.

Karen,
OHMYGOSH - you are brilliant! Yes, there IS a cute 7th grade brother! And that WOULD explain why ALL of these girls were heavily perfumed and positively giddy and GIGGLY all the way over there! Hmmmm......!!!! You have SOLVED this riddle (which I didn't even realize was a riddle!!) :)

Ha, ha, ha! That is very funny and very cute. Don't you remember all those grand ideas that we had as kids? Looking back I can totally see my parents saying, "OK dear, sounds good," and then blogging about it later, if they had blogs back then. :)

Oh my gosh. This is so funny. I just burst out laughing. I can NOT wait to hear how this turns out. Can not wait. Don't worry, she will love this someday. I can't wait until Kaish can look back at the blog and look thru the crazy events of his life : ). I think he will treasure it forever. Because you and I both know that blogger is going to be around FOREVER.

PS Which expensive perfume does she wear?

Rebeckah,
Her 2 favorites of my perfumes are:
Liz Sport (which I never wear) and
Inis (from Ireland - CRAZY expensive - and one of my favorites).

Pumpkin - you are SO right! My daughter is a mini-me not just physically but with all these ideas she comes up with. I love her independent spirit! (Even though I know that strong-willed nature will drive me to DRINK when she is a teenager!) :)

Ahh I remember those days although it was quite some time ago. The perfume would kill me though. Luckily I have a long time until my daughter swipes my perfume. She's already taking my makeup.

My 89 year old Grandmother keeps telling me that strong-willed, busy children will be very smart and independent when they grow up. It's what keeps me going!

Looking forward to the updates.

Much love from NJ,
Sue
